Hugo: Bukkazoom - a racing arcade game based on the cartoon universe about the troll Hugo. To the domestic TV viewer, this character is better known as Kuzya (not to be confused with the brownie).
Well, this is Hugo: Bukkazoom! I really don’t know what to tell you folks, this is definitely, technically, a game. Focusing strongly on the kart racer style of game, we have some kind of troll creature attempting its own take on the beloved genre and doing a serviceable job while theyre at it. Hugo for Windows, v1.5 - Windows adventure trilogy for whole family! First game in a series of three cartoon- style puzzle-solving graphics adventures set in a haunted house, a whodunit mystery and a menacing jungle.
There is no specific storyline here - no quests. The only thing that connects the project with a TV show for children are familiar characters. This time, the main characters decide to come up with a new occupation. The creatures have found a way to reduce themselves to the size of some kind of insect with one single purpose - they want to arrange incredibly hot races on these very insects.

A key feature of the project is the lack of clearly defined tracks. Locations opposite are quite spacious, which allows the heroes to reach the finish line in different ways. You can take a short road, but many will do just that, and therefore will have to engage in battles. The rest can be chosen by a long, but safer path, where you only need to overcome obstacles and press the gas pedal as hard as possible. Numerous bonuses are available for battles, scattered across levels.
Cooperative passage becomes an equally important feature. In this case, players can even gather on one computer. A maximum of four real people can participate in one race - in this case, the screen is simply divided into equal parts.

Well, this is Hugo: Bukkazoom! apparently. I really don’t know what to tell you folks, this is definitely, technically, a game. Focusing strongly on the kart racer style of game, we have some kind of troll creature attempting its own take on the beloved genre and doing a serviceable job while theyre at it. If you are after another simple racing game with your friends and you’ve played the rest of them to death? This might be a new one for you. Let’s buckle up and get right into it.
Gameplay
Much like Mario Kart 8, Crash Team Racing, or even Ben 10 Galactic Racing, this game takes the kart racer formula and absolutely goes to town on it. This is somewhat unlike many of the other games in the genre where some may have flavor-based items that work in the context of the universe, this one just has characters shooting rockets at each other and usually normal looking energy shields. There are a few different game modes but the majority of them involve driving around like a lunatic and attempting to complete goals faster than everyone else.
I’ll be honest when I say that there is a shockingly pleasant amount of weight to the karts that you are driving. When you take a hard corner and it looks like the opposing wheels are about to come up, it feels satisfyingly heavy which adds a lot more to the feel of a game than many would think.
Flavor
There is absolutely no story or explanation as to what is happening or why. I looked extensively and the entire premise is clearly not about the story but about the gameplay and the gameplay alone. Hugo and his colorful collection of characters from his past, including his wife and kids, friends from previous games, and his strangely sexy arch nemesis Scylla all compete in these contests for kart supremacy. Beyond that, there is very little to it. I’d be remiss to not mention the game has a lot of personality to it, Hugo often talks throughout the menus, he’ll knock on the screen and comment on things that you are looking at. I found it to be a surprisingly interesting, if not fourth wall breaking, way to give exposition.
Multiplayer
Yes, that’s right, this game successfully implemented multiplayer. That does not include any kind of online playing as this game was made long before that got implemented into most systems. Instead, it’s a simple, four-way screen split that allows you and three friends to play this strange and unique game from a bygone era.
If you are a crazed kart racer collector or are a long-standing lover of the Hugo saga then this is definitely one for you. It doesn’t have much but it does have charm that will keep you playing for a little while at least.
Pros:
- Amusing Charm
- Easy to engage with
Cons:
- Absolutely no story to speak of
- Needs more varied game modes
